“The future of work in the tourism sector: Sustainable and safe recovery and decent work in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic”, Report for the Technical Meeting on COVID-19 and Sustainable Recovery in the Tourism Sector (Geneva, 25–29 April 2022)

In March 2021, the International Labour Office organized a meeting to address the impact of COVID-19 on the tourism sector. The meeting aimed to discuss strategies for a sustainable recovery, emphasizing decent work and inclusive policies. A report prepared for the meeting highlighted the sector’s challenges, including job losses and economic decline. The pandemic caused a significant downturn in global tourism, resulting in trillions of dollars in losses and millions of job cuts. Small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) were particularly affected, with many going bankrupt. Vulnerable groups such as women, youth, migrants, and indigenous workers suffered the most from job losses and business closures.
